westport
Westport is a town on Upper Rideau lake accessible by boat (through Narrows lock) or by car (25 min drive). Check out the cute shops and boutiques or grab a coffee or ice cream. If you like local craft beer check out Westport Brewing Co. or if wine is more your thing be sure to stop by Scheuermann Winery.
perth
The town of Perth is about a 25 minute drive from the cottage and has everything you could need from grocery stores to restaurants, a local brewery, cheese store, LCBO and Canadian Tire.
fall colours
The Rideau Lakes region really puts on a show in the fall. Come walk the local trails or take a serene canoe ride and view the stunning colours!
skate the lake
Skate the Lake was first hosted in 2004 and has brought skaters and spectators from around the world to the small village of Portland. Each January they build 1km & 2.5km ovals on Big Rideau Lake and host speed skating races of varying distances to appeal to amateur & professional skaters, young & young at heart. Activities for spectators include curling, ice stock, sleigh rides, fireworks on the ice, Snert (dutch pea soup) and Skate Tails.

for the land lovers
The cottage is only a few hundred metres away from the Rideau Trail which is a 387 km network of trails between Kingston and Ottawa and offers beautiful scenery of rivers lakes and rugged Canadian Sheild. Just off Hwy 15 you will also find access to the Cataraqui Trail which offers over 100km of hiking/biking trials in the warm seasons and is used for snowmobiling and cross country skiing in the winter. Nearby Murphy's point also has more than 20km of groomed and ungroomed cross country ski trails for the winter enthusiast. The immediate area around the cottage also offers some great ATV trails for those who like their land activities a little more motorized.
